GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 600465
Visualizations freeze in Rhythmbox 0.12.5
Last modified: 2011-08-26 20:56:59 UTC
I am reporting this bug upstream on the recommendation of one of the Ubuntu package maintainers for Rhythmbox, the initial bug report (which has been confirmed) may be found here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/469481 Essentially the problem is that visualizations in the 0.12.x version of Rhythmbox display one frame and then stop completely. You can switch to different visualizations and turn them on and off (i.e. doesn't appear to affect program responsiveness). However, the visualizations themselves never display any more than the first rendered frame, no matter which visualization is being used. If any additional information about my system is needed please see the attachments in the bug report for Ubuntu. Both the 32-bit and 64-bit iterations of Rhythmbox seem to be affected.
I can't reproduce this. Do you have crossfading enabled? Does the same thing happen in totem?
Crossfading appears to be disabled in my case. As for Totem, very curious case there...the same visualizations run in Totem just fine. Your guess is as good as mine there, I know I've been able to reproduce the bug on two different machines but it's unusual that you couldn't -- if there's any more information I can provide to try and clear things up please let me know.
Okay, more information to add just from a bit of testing...this doesn't make _ANY_ sense to me at all, but it could potentially be useful. 1) Opened up Totem and start playing a song, visualizations are working fine 2) While song was playing, opened Rhythmbox and started playing a song...visualizations were now playing fine in Rhythmbox?! 3) Once song in Totem stopped playing _its_ song, Rhythmbox's visualizations locked up again. To get them working again I had to repeat the process from step 1. I don't know how that will be helpful but maybe someone who can make sense of it will be pointed in the right direction? :>
I can confirm this issue. See also this discussion: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1361883 As suggested in the forum, the problem ceases and visualizations work normally if I enable crossfading (and subsequently restart Rhythmbox). However, crossfading is disabled by default, and therefore the visualization usually doesn't work. As prower2000 notes, though, the visualization works sometimes under certain conditions. This is tested under up-to-date Ubuntu Lucid.
