GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 600016
Confusing error message when double-registering XMPP account
Last modified: 2010-09-13 13:28:24 UTC
The error message "Authentication failed" is confusing when accidentally double-registering an XMPP-account with a server. Confusion is caused because "use an existing" and "register new" choices are not obvious for a user new to XMPP account registration. Possible mistakes in logic are: * Am I registering a new account when adding it to my client? * Does "use an existing" mean "copy details from"? * Doesn't "Authentication failed" mean I just typed the wrong password or username? Steps to reproduce: 1. Add a _new_ XMPP account on any machine. Make sure this username and server is unique. (auth works) 2. Add another _new_ XMPP account on another machine. Make sure this username is identical with step 1. 3. Get the error message "Authentication failed" and be confused why your new (for the client config) account won't authenticate. Is there a use case for being allowed to add the same account twice into empathy? this shouldn't be allowed unless there is a specific reason to have two identical accounts in empathy.
