Description Patricio Pérez 2009-10-21 20:25:04 UTC
When i send mails through google mail imap, it stores on [Gmail/Enviados] folder, but there is a duplicate of the same mail in that folder.
Using Evolution 2.28.1 in Ubuntu Karmic (The bug was in 2.26.1 too, using Ubuntu Jaunty)

Steps to reproduce:
1-. Set a Google Mail App in Evolution
2-. Set the Send folder to [Gmail/Enviados] (May vary depending on your locale)
3-. Send a mail through Google Mail account, it will store the mail two times in your [Gmail/Enviados] folder.

Maybe this is not a real bug, but "conflicting features" with GMail. Emails sent via GMail SMTP are automatically saved in Sent folder and so does Evolution, duplicating the entry.
It would be great to have in Evolution a per account option to disable auto-saving of sent mails.

> Yes, GMail adds an auto-bcc to yourself for any message sent through SMTP-MSA, this isn't IMAP or POP specific.

This does mean you don't need to automatically save a copy in the sent folder.

That said, if you do save a copy in the sent folder, our duplicate detection should detect that and you should only end up with one. This requires that the two messages are nearly identical, in particular they need to have the same subject and message-id, at least.

This bug normally indicates that the message being appended to the sent folder doesn't have a message-id, and the client is relying on the smtp server to add a message-id. This means the message will end up with two different message ids (gmail will add one to APPEND messages as well, we require messages to have one).

Hope this helps.

Hope this gets fixed for 2.30
Comment 5 Dan Mihai Ile 2010-05-16 21:53:41 UTC
I can confirm this bug on Evolution 2.28.3, Ubuntu 10.04 64bits

If I set the sent folder the same as gmail/Sent Mail, it seems that the email is sent twice.

As stated in comment #1, GMail is saving copy of the sent message to Sent Mail folder on its own, which is not standard approach. You can edit your mail account and change the Sent folder to some other in the Defaults tab, say to the default On This Computer/Sent folder to workaround GMail's feature which makes you feel as bug in Evolution. Evolution doesn't have many workarounds for GMail and the less it will have the better.
