GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 599032
[GDM] 2.28 does not respect hal keyboard layout other than USA
Last modified: 2009-10-27 11:52:49 UTC
GDM 2.28 login greeting window does not respect hal keyboard layout settings (i.e /etc/hal/fdi/policy files). It uses the standard usa keyboard layout instead. After one has entered their user name and has to fill in the password, the person is able to choose a keyboard layout from the gnome panel. This does not apply to the screen where one has to fill in his user name afterwards. Steps to reproduce: * Create a /etc/hal/fdi/policy/10-keymap.fdi file that includes a keyboard layout different from usa. * Try to login with gdm afterwards (probably restart hal/gdm for changes to take effect) and notice that the new keyboard layout is not respected Additional info: * package version: gdm 2.28 * Reported Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gdm/+bug/421212. * Arch bbs link: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=638161 Proposed fix: * Ubuntu's patch is located here (and also attached): http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/gdm/ubuntu/annotate/head%3A/debian/patches/01_default_keyboard_layout_hal.patch http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/16697 Several users including me have already applied the patch and it seems to be working fine. Can this be revised for a future GDM release?

(In reply to comment #1) > *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 572765 *** Is this bug fixed in GDM 2.28.1 or will it be implemented later? Thanks for clearing this up to me, because I patched my GDM 2.28.0 and it works now, but don't feel like upgrading to 2.28.1 and needing to patch it again afterwards.
it's not in 2.28.1
Is there a special reason why it isn't? I mean there is a patch out for at least 2 weeks... Don't get me wrong, I think you guys do an amazing job but I'm just curious what's the reason and when it will be implemented.
well, hal is dying, and there are murmurs from the X side of the fence that X won't use hal in the future. So pushing it will always be a stop gap. Doesn't mean it's a bad idea, mind you. Anyway, we just need to look at the patch and get it commited, probably.
Thank you for clearing that up! However HAL is dying, it's still being used by a sheer amount of users who now all experience this annoying bug if USA isn't the default keyboard layout... Anyway, it's your call but it would be really appreciated :-)
