Description Sebastien Bacher 2009-10-14 13:10:22 UTC
The bug has been opened on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/empathy/+bug/447098

"Steps to reproduce:
1.) launch empathy in karmic live session
2.) choose the second bullet "No, I want a new account"
3.) in the first drop down there is only "jabber" and "google talk"

Expected: all protocols which are available

Workaround: close this window and go to edit->accounts or choose "yes, I'll enter my account details now" in the first dialog

empathy 2.28.0.1-1ubuntu3"

Confirmed on karmic beta CD or current install in a guest session, telepathy-butterfly and telepathy-haze are installed and other accounts working
Comment 2 Cosimo Cecchi 2009-10-14 13:20:28 UTC
This is kind of expected, as there's no way of creating, say, a MSN account programmatically. In fact, GTalk should not be there either.

What we could do though is to redirect the user to the on-line page where you can sign-up to the service.

As Cosimo said, only XMPP supports in band registration. Let's use this bug to track improvement of the "new account" dialog.

We should document how to create accounts on different protocol using either a wiki page or the Empathy manual. The wiki is nice as it's more flexible and can be easily updated but the manual will give us translations.

We should also inform the user that he is actually CREATING a new account. The ui looks exactly the same as in "use existing account".

I ran into this problem when I first used empathy, because if I say "ADD" and then get asked if I want to reuse an account or create a new one I spontaneously thought of "create new one". Well that wasn't what I wanted...but I think it's not clear what the options mean. I don't expect to input my login information when creating a new account...not intuitive at all.

Not all users are aware that xmpp supports in band registration ;)

One solution could be: rename "New Jabber Account" to "Create new jabber account" and write one small red sentence below: "Creating new jabber accounts is not supported by all servers. make sure your provider does support creating new accounts in band." (well I guess the sentence can be improved a lot but I think it's enough to prove my point)

Another thing is: do people really know where they can create jabber accounts? Wouldn't it be simpler for them if we would provide some jabber services they can choose? The "new" user only has to set his nickname and can choose a server in a dropdown list of well known jabber account providers.

Another idea is to make some kind of create new account wizard with some steps to follow like when setting up a new email account on evolution or thunderbird. thats more like a "registration" process than it is now.

Just some thoughts how this could be improved...

There is a very similar bug to this one: bug #548712
