GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 597663
Some Layer are missing after saving and reopening a *.xfc File
Last modified: 2009-10-09 12:28:09 UTC
Created attachment 144942 [details] the xcf image which loosed some layers it happened the 3rd time to me, that after saving a drawing with multiple layers (7 or 8 Layers) directly to my USB-Stick and reopening it from it, that some layer are missing. Last time there were only 3 Layers left and closing and reopening didnt change anything. So I think they are completly lost. There were no message that the saving or opening fail or that the file is corrupt. I attachted the xcf file (whats left of it) maybe this will help you to find the problem.
This doesn't happen if you save somewhere else?
Did you check if perhaps the USB stick had not enough space left to hold the XCF file when this error occured? Might be that we need to improve the write code to detect write errors better.
(In reply to comment #1) > This doesn't happen if you save somewhere else? Until now it only happens while saving to an usb stick. I only use HD or USB-stick to save my drawings. Saving to the usb takes (of course) much more time (about 10 - 20 seconds) so this may only happen if the storage access is slow.

Might be that we need to improve the write > code to detect write errors better. The usb stick had ca 3 GB memory left before saving. So I think there was more than enough space to save. But I didnt check it after saving, because the save process seemed to were successful. I realized the error later while opening the file again.
I tried this with your image (duplicated a few layers to make it bigger), and can't reproduce this.
right, this is not reproducable. Saving the works most of the time (I save very often because of programm crashes and so on). But it happened to me only 3 times with different pictures, 2 times with version 2.6 and last time with the current 2.6.7 version. Maybe this is not a Gimp problem but I think at least Gimp should show an error if saving wasnt successful. I hoped that the image I sent contains some information about the missing layers or parts of them are still there and couldnt only be parsed. If this happens again or i will find some new information about this issue I will inform you.
I found a way to reproduce this. Im not sure if this is what Ive done when it happened. But please try this: 1) add some layer that saving the picture will take some time 2) save (ctrl s) and klick on the x of the window to close the application 3) open the application and the picture again and check the layer if saving hasnt been finished and you click close on the main window - It seems this will interupt the saving progress. So maybe i were just to fast with closing the application while saving...
