Description David Wardle 2009-10-05 18:41:35 UTC
I run Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) 2.6.28-15 generic recently installed and wheneve I try to watch a movie on totem the screen flashes continually. This did not happen before upgrading from Ubunto 8.10

Are you using compiz or similar? If so, try disabling it.
Comment 2 jpit2005 2009-10-14 07:10:57 UTC
Is there any option without disabling the compiz
Comment 3 Philip Withnall 2009-10-14 07:37:47 UTC
We just need to know whether the flashing stops if you disable Compiz. You can re-enable if afterwards if you want, subject to further tests.

I don't know what compiz is or how to disable it. can you please help so that I can try it.

Go to System → Preferences → Appearance. Click on the "Visual Effects" tab and select the "none" option.

Thanks. I have tried this and found that 'none' was already selected. I did try the 'normal' setting but got the message 'desktop appearance could not be changed'.

I'd be grateful for any other suggestions.

what do you mean by "screen flashing"? If you had a screencast, or short explanation on how to reproduce the problem, it would be appreciated.
Comment 8 Tobias Wolf 2010-05-05 00:22:19 UTC
Don’t know if I see the same type of flashing or if it is separate.
I first observed it during 2.30 cycle under Ubuntu Lucid.

I get black dropouts on many keypresses that Totem reacts to like 0, 1, and 2 to scale or Ctrl-R and Ctrl-T.

Also, upon clicking the title bar and switching workspaces.

Hard to record screencast, only ffmpeg at 30 fps caught a number of dropouts.

Has noisy audio. Didn’t intend to record it, but with it you can tell I’m pushing some buttons so I left it in.

- xvimagesink used.
- Movie Player using GStreamer 0.10.28
- visible using both compiz and metacity (w/ composition off)
