GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 596481
how do i post a followup to an NNTP message from a vfolder
Last modified: 2015-04-23 12:23:17 UTC
So I have an NNTP server and groups configured. I have a group configured in a vfolder. I open a message in the vfolder that is in fact from an NNTP server. How do I "followup-post" to that message? On a somewhat related note... I am presently viewing a vfolder. I want to post a new message to an NNTP group, so I news New->Mail Message. There is no available "Post-To:" option. And still somewhat related, when I go to a newsgroup and then choose New->Mail Message, the Post-To: field is filled with the group I am in. I am not able to add any Cc: or Bcc: recipients. These, sadly, are all regressions from 2.26. All of this was possible in 2.26 with the exception that posting a new message from a vfolder did everything as expected but when you hit Send it looked like it sent, but it didn't in fact send anything to the NNTP server. That was a bug though.

How do I "followup-post" to that message? Click Reply, then -- unless you have your NNTP account set as the default account -- select your NNTP account in the From header. There's definitely a case to be made for picking a better initial account when replying to messages from a search folder. That needs more work. But replying directly from the NNTP account works correctly. > On a somewhat related note... I am presently viewing a vfolder. The composer window will automatically switch to a set of headers appropriate for a newsgroup article. > And still somewhat related, when I go to a newsgroup and then choose > New->Mail Message, the Post-To: field is filled with the group I am in. Ahhh! > There's definitely a > case to be made for picking a better initial account when replying to messages > from a search folder. Indeed. > But replying directly from the > NNTP account works correctly. We'll see I guess. I just did one and in the Post-To: it displayed a path starting with "vfolder". I really should have copied it down but it was in a vnc session and copy'n'paste through vnc sucks rocks. > Again, select your NNTP account in the From header. The composer window will > automatically switch to a set of headers appropriate for a newsgroup article. Cool. > Cc and Bcc headers are not supported by newsgroups. Why not? This is nothing new. > Those fields are now > correctly disabled when an NNTP account is selected in the From header. I disagree about the correctness of it. Most certainly, Evolution would not be the first mail/news tool that allowed posting and e-mailing an article at the same time. Indeed, I'd tend to guess it'd be in the minority of NNTP clients that don't.

Indeed, I'd tend to guess it'd be in the minority of NNTP > clients that don't. That's a valid enhancement request, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's filed already. But to my knowledge it doesn't work currently. We would need additional newsgroup account settings to know which email account to use when copying recipients via SMTP while posting an article via NNTP. Currently the NNTP backend simply discards Cc and Bcc headers if found, so it makes sense to hide them in the composer until we have that feature.

I mentioned before in comment #2: > > We'll see I guess. I just did one and in the Post-To: it displayed a path > starting with "vfolder". To a test group, reply, then selecting the usenet account results in a Post To: of: vfolder:/home/brian/.evolution/mail/vfolder/test Surely that's not correct. Certainly if I correct it to remove the "vfolder:/home/brian/.evolution/mail/vfolder/" junk at the beginning, it posts correctly. This should be trivial to fix I'd think. If you cook up a patch for 2.28.1 I'll apply and test it here. :-)
