Description Gil Forcada 2009-09-25 17:11:49 UTC
All distributions not only include the software in the gnome-2-xx release set but they also include other applications that their translations are handled by the GNOME translation project.

It would be quite useful if we split the gnome-extras set with at least two sets: the most used applications outside the given official GNOME release and the rest.

That way, the gnome-extras would be smaller and for translation teams that get through translating the official set they have a new set to translate useful applications that surely are in their distribution (say rhythmbox, banshee, pitivi ...)

Seems a good idea?

Even if it's not like that, better organizing the gnome-extra set would really improve the time spent translating GNOME software, since if you spent a complete month translating Galeon or other outdated software just to then realize that this software is no longer used anymore and then see that your music player still displays on English is quite bad :S

Sorry, but I'm not very fond of this idea. First it's very difficult to draw a line between 'most used' applications and other applications. We already have an obsolete category for those apps wich are really obsoleted. What would you answer to a developer who ask you to put his application on the 'most used' list? What criterion must he satisfy before his app can be accepted?

And I'm sure translators are clever enough to choose the applications they want to translate.

If you can provide clear rules to determine which application is popular and which is not, this could be implemented.
e.g.: the package is in Ubuntu main repository
You should investigate if there is such a distinction in other popular distros (Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuse)
