GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 595678
When using tablet the selection markers disappear
Last modified: 2012-05-28 20:46:11 UTC
Using a wacom bamboo tablet with GIMP for a while, causes the program to stop showing selection borders, layer borders, so i cannot see the selections i make! In the view menu, all these are check, and this trouble doesn't occur if i use a mouse. thanks i'm trying to submit every bug with tablets i see to help improve tablet support.
I can confirm this happens to me as well, on WIndows XP, using Gimp 2.6.4
Why do you use GIMP 2.6.4?
When this problem happens, does the tablet continue to work for everything else - painting in particular?
yes, this problem just affects the selections you made, layer borders, guides, etc.
Um, "guides, etc."? are you sure guides are affected, or is it just the selection and layer boundaries?
ups you're right, only selection and layer boundaries.
I'm sure this has been reported before, but I don't find the older bug.
Most likely bug #505758.
i think this bug is more related to tablet use. Normal use of gimp(using mouse) doesn't bring this problem.(at least since 2.6.0)

I can confirm this as well. I'm using the brand new Bamboo Pen & Touch medium. After a while the selection borders stop showing. I haven't been able to figure out what's triggering this. The workaround is to restart Gimp... I run Windows XP and Gimp 2.6.11.
I can confirm this with Gimp 2.6.8 on Ubuntu Lucid, using Wacom Volito 2. (It's a very old model, but if other people have been getting this issue, I doubt the problem is with my hardware) I've got the selection disappearing issue, and a few others: - Guides can't be dragged out of the rulers with a tablet. They can, however, be dragged out with a mouse or from the Image -> Guides menu. - If I select File -> Save As... with a tablet, any cursor interaction with the menu that pops up is disabled. If I select it with a mouse, there's no problem. The selection issue does not happen too often, but the guide and save issues occur every time. The tablet works fine otherwise. I use it instead of a mouse in a number of different applications and Gimp is the only one I get any issues with. I hope all this is useful. Andrey
Please try GIMP 2.7.4 and report back, we won't fix 2.6 bugs any longer.
Could you please try to reproduce problem with GIMP 2.7.4 or later version and update the bug report with your findings, tia.
I will try this version as soon as a Windows installer is available. Does anyone know when this migh be? Regards, Erik

Does this still happen with 2.8.0?
Okay I realise this is probably not helpful but I have NOT observed the bug since about over a year ago (sorry I should have reported this earlier) when I upgraded my system from Ubuntu Karmic, Gimp 2.6.7 (see Comment#10), to Ubuntu Lucid, Gimp 2.6.8 (yes, like Andrey P, Comment#12). I still use my tablet in Gimp on a weekly basis. So, as far as I'm concerned this bug is no longer an issue. One possibly relevant point (where my system might differ from Andrey P's): I now use KDE4 (4.5.3), with tabbed windows activated. So what I'll do is upgrade my system, including Gimp, to a current version, then disable tabbed windows for some time and see if the bug comes back. If you don't hear from me that means I haven't been able to observe the bug again. Thanks!
Thanks, let's assume it's fixed :)
