Sound does not work. Only get tiny static.

Some more questions. 

Which applications (players) have you tired?

Does it work in other apps? If so which.

Are you using pulseaudio (chosen in gstreamer-properties)? If so is it running?

The messages you lsited above are just diagostics. No issue with that.

Sound does not work in ANY application, including logging in.

It's just a default installation of Ubuntu (9.10, Karmic Koala, latest).

PulseAudio is listed among running processes.

You still did not mention what is selected in gstreamer-properties. But in the end you will need to fix your audio setup. Once audio works gstreamer will be able to play sounds as well. Try getting support from the ubuntu community regarding your setup.
