Description Victor Vargas 2009-08-26 21:23:49 UTC
This report was filled at originally at:
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/417666

Totem's thumbnail application has an annoying habit of attempting to create thumbnails for files that are currently being downloaded or copied. Due to the fact that these files keep changing and are incomplete this causes the thumbnail creator to suck up 100% in many cases or it creates worthless thumbnails of pure green.

The obvious solution seems to be not attempting thumbnail extraction on such incomplete files

Totem doesn't do that, nautilus does it using libgnomeui.

The bug still exists in Ubuntu 12.04

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia

ProcEnviron:
SHELL=/bin/bash
ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.31-6.26-generic
SourcePackage: totem
Uname: 3.2.0-29-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jul 27 17:03:23 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

As I see it is "unconfirmed" and it is a duplicate of bug 107418 which is nearly 10 years old, may I assume than "unconfirmed" just means "ignored"?
Comment 9 Magnetizer 2012-08-14 18:50:30 UTC
Sorry, I did not update the ProcVersionSignature but you can see the output of "uname -a" which is the correct one.
Comment 10 Adrián 2014-02-26 18:57:45 UTC
(Nautilus 3.10.1 and Fedora 20)

I don't have any CPU usage issues but if I open a directory containing a video file that is still being downloaded, its thumbnail will never be created.

If I manually delete the failed thumbnail cache and refresh the directory, the thumbnails is displayed as expected.

It would be nice to have the thumbnail created when the download is finished without having to clean the cache myself.

Comment 12 André Klapper 2021-06-18 15:54:38 UTC
GNOME is going to shut down bugzilla.gnome.org in favor of gitlab.gnome.org.
As part of that, we are mass-closing older open tickets in bugzilla.gnome.org
which have not seen updates for a longer time (resources are unfortunately
quite limited so not every ticket can get handled).

If you can still reproduce the situation described in this ticket in a recent
and supported software version of Files (nautilus), then please follow
  https://wiki.gnome.org/GettingInTouch/BugReportingGuidelines
and create a new ticket at
  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/nautilus/-/issues/

Thank you for your understanding and your help.
