IMHO it would look much better if expanded sections/groups had a bit of space added to the bottom. Something like half a line maybe? Don't know if this is possible, if not, maybe a whole free line would also work. For closed groups, this extra space should not show up.

I agree that this would look better but I'd like to hear different advices as some people already complained that the contact list uses too much space.

This is kinda like bug 548627, GTK+ doesn't offer enough theming possibilities for treeview headers.

Developers & UI designers are discussing border, spacing, and other ways to separate groups within the Contact List in bug #548627 -- I'll show them Michael's mockup.
