Description François Pinard 2009-07-24 01:50:36 UTC
I put aside http://pinard.progiciels-bpi.ca/images/meld-case1.png to illustrate the situation. Unselecting "Identique" (or "Same") yielded "empty folder" as all files are identical, or ignored. But I had to open many nested folders to get to that result. In the precise case here, that situation repeats often, as there are many hundreds of directories, and thousands of files, with very little differences. Meld could be more friendly and require less of my time.

Other information:
I hope you make some sense out of my prose, and also that you can get the picture. I might destroy it however, in some future, yet not soon. Keep happy, all!

Just attach the screen capture to the bug report then...

But cannot really understand what is your problem.

Is it that meld folds all the directory tree upon
(un)checking the "same" toggle button ?

OK, I just attached the image as you suggested. Thanks. I missed it was possible.

I also saw bug 476613, and merely forgot to point at it (I put a note to myself in the night to annotate this report on awakening ☺). It looks like related, but as I was not fully sure it is the same situation, I went forward and submitted this report.

My suggestion (much more than my "problem" ☺ — I discovered Meld only recently, but have been diffing files and directories for quite a long time now) is that Meld complies with the intent behind the unchecking of "Same", which is limiting the display to differences only, as far as possible without losing essential context.

My only "problem" is that I liked Meld so much that I would like to use it always, instead of my previous flurry of tricks and tools. But I'm a reasonable man!
