Description Emil Assarsson 2009-07-15 16:26:42 UTC
Please describe the problem:
The Airbrush produces bandings when its used with a soft brush and low pressure.
The sharp edges in the bands is very visible when it occurs in a otherwise soft image. The low pressure is very useful when I want to have good control over the spray.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create an image with white background 500 x 500
2. Select the airbrush tool
3. Select black foreground color
4. Create a new round brush with a radius of 200 and softness of 0.5 and select it
5. Set Pressure to 3.0
6. Use the Airbrush an the center of the image and hold the pointer at one point until the center is black.

Actual results:
sharp bandings between white and back. There are only about 10 levels.

Expected results:
A soft blob without bandings. There should be a full number (256 levels) of grays from black to white.

Does this happen every time?
yes and in every version.

While this is certainly not nice, it is not strictly a bug. It's just an area that could be improved. You can keep this bug report open though as a place where you can attach your patches to improve this,

Repeatedly applying low opacity paint to an 8 bit image always creates
banding, git master allows higher bit depth images where this doesn't
happen any longer.
