GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 587352
GIMP 2.6.6 Severely Unstable on Window Vista 32
Last modified: 2009-08-05 05:34:50 UTC
I've been a GIMP user for nearly 2 years now and have used several versions successfully for editing .dds files for video game application. I recently installed version 2.6.6, eager to try the new features. What I discovered is that unlike previous versions 2.6.6 behaves with extreme instability on my system. It sometimes crashes on start up. When open, its crashes come at seemingly random times and without warning or significant error messages. The only message I get is the generic "Program Not Responding" then crash. It has happened when copy/pasting between two open windows, when using the normalmap filter, and often when saving. It crashes almost every time I attempt to use it; particularly dodgy when I click "SaveAs". For now, I will be reverting to a previous stable version, but I hope 2.6.6 (or the future 2.6.7 maybe?) are more stable in the future, because what I did get to experience of the program before crashing is fantastic. I'd love to be able to use it without fear! On a note to the GIMP team, Thanks for all your hard work in giving us this amazing tool, I use Photoshop CS4 as well, and I have to say I far prefer the GIMP for ease of use and some superior tools! Cheers! Shaun Cooper
Hi and thanks for the bug report and the feedback! We are well aware of that we have stability issues on Windows, in particular GIMP 2.6.6 seems to be terrible for some reason. None of the core developers use Windows however so there is currently no one able and/or willing to debug these issues. Until some Windows user with the proper skills and time shows up, these problems will remain :(
This is definitely not a problem with the GIMP code but with the way that the 2.6.6 installer has been compiled.
Is there a way to install without using the compiled installer?
Gimp crashes each time (so that the feature is unuseful) when you try to change the saturation (by the menu or the right click: tools / color tools / saturation) using Gimp 2.6.6 under Windows Vista on the computer of my partner (she's too stubborn to use Linux) but on my computer using Ubuntu, Gimp 2.6.6 works perfectly. So I installed Gimp 2.4 and then the feature is functionnal. This is very boring because you can't make advertising for Gimp to all the people who (sadly) use Windows or you must recommend version 2.4! Thank's so much for all your work (I could hardly use another software)! Sincerely.
We're currently putting some efforts in trying to fix this issue (this is a duplicate of bug 577581) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 577581 ***
