Sometimes almost all menu items become disabled (greyed out) for no apparent reason.

Please give us some more information. 

Do you have any dialogs open? 
Are you currently editing a cell?

What have you been doing just before?

Assuming that you did not do anything special, I suspect that this is really a duplicate of a known (and fixed) bug.

The duplicate report contains more info including a link to a screenshot. If that isn't your situation please reopen this report.

This particular bug has already been reported into our bug tracking system, but we are happy to tell you that the problem has already been fixed. It should be solved in the next software version. You may want to check for a software upgrade.
