Description lachlan.00 2009-06-12 00:25:46 UTC
when using compact view i changed my default from 100% to 150% to get icons.
when you open a different folder the scrollbar should be all the way to the left of the window.
But it isn't after this change and i find that a lot of folders have this problem with different view sizes. Causing me to scroll back on a lot of windows because i can't see the next folder i want to open.

so in short when you open a folder with a different view size it seems to attach the initial view to the right side of the column like it believes all folders are the same size.

Doesn't reproduce when opening in a new tab.

To reproduce:
-open your home folder
-change view to larger than your default (eg default 150% change to 200%)
-press UP on nautilus to move to /home folder which will be your default
-open your home folder and the scrollbar has moved from the edge.

really, really annoying when you change views to look at pictures for example.

Other information:
i'll attach a screenshot of what i mean.

Left side is when you follow the steps i listed and the right is when you open a new window which should be the default folder browsing behavior.

I think that this is related to the LENGTH of the folder name in the nautilus window.

click on a small folder in a column that has a width larger than the window width.

nautilus will try and fit the largest file name in the window from the RIGHT side of the filename.

for windows that aren't wide enough you might end up moving past the smaller folders view, this is still happening in 2.28

you can see on the two smaller windows that before you click on any other folder than the long one they are visible.

the scrollbar will more to the right of the longest folder.

this should either snap to the left of the column of the selected folder, otherwise you can't double click on the folder

This new bug i filed is similar which means this hasn't been fixed yet.
Selections in compact view aren't behaving properly.

There is new information in the debian report but it's pretty much the same issue

Confirming. This bug makes the compact view difficult to use when dealing with directories with mixed long/short filenames.

From the duplicate: looks like this happens only when the "All columns have the same width" preference is off.

Hmm, it's off by default in 2.91, which doesn't help with this bug.

Still occuring for me in nautilus 3.0.2. (unsure about higher)
Comment 9 lachlan.00 2011-11-16 05:27:47 UTC
This bug seems to be getting worse.

In addition to columns moving for the fun of it still as in the original report. I've also noticed when working on a large list of folders the following occurs:

-Open folder that is in a large group.
-Press backspace to go back a level.
-The view moves (to the left for me) away from the last folder i selected so i can't see the folder i clicked anymore.

This new behaviour also occurs when "all columns have the same width" is set.

When people click through folders they expect the selection/view to be the same as when they left the folder or at the very least still within the window so they can see it highlighted.

I want to be able to double click on a folder and the view doesn't move all over the place. Then i want to be able to go back into that folder and see the view i left it with.

Why does nautilus insist on such a schizophrenic movement when the file/folder is already in full view of the user? If anything I'd prefer it didn't move at all unless the user scrolled manually or typed searching for a name.

This seems to be an issue in how nautilus displays folder contents. But it is only obvious in compact view because of the way contents are displayed can be random compared to icons or list view which remain the same.

disabling scroll on click and remembering last view location of opened folders would be a god send.

The Compact View does not exist anymore in recent Nautilus versions, so I am closing this ticket as OBSOLETE.
Sorry that your bug report was not fixed around the time you reported it. :-/
