I request to add protocol specific smileys: msn has lots of smileys that are currently not handled.

Also custom smileys (if supported by the protocol) should be used, either when you send it (so this requires a way to set a custom smiley) or receive it (and this requires to implement the image retrieval)

This is still not fixed in the version included with Ubuntu 9.10. I think this should be added especially after all the amazing work that has been done on file transfers and video chat support.

Nicolo: Do you have a list of official MSN smileys which are not supported in Empathy?

Custom smileys are a different issue, let's focus on protocol one in this bug.

Have a look at the emoticon theme in Pidgin. They have sections for all protocols with possible text representation there.

Yahoo also has some unsupported emoticons in empathy, like :-h.
