GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 583542
add protocol specific smileys
Last modified: 2018-05-22 13:27:15 UTC
I request to add protocol specific smileys: msn has lots of smileys that are currently not handled. Also custom smileys (if supported by the protocol) should be used, either when you send it (so this requires a way to set a custom smiley) or receive it (and this requires to implement the image retrieval)

This is still not fixed in the version included with Ubuntu 9.10. I think this should be added especially after all the amazing work that has been done on file transfers and video chat support.
Nicolo: Do you have a list of official MSN smileys which are not supported in Empathy? Custom smileys are a different issue, let's focus on protocol one in this bug.
I found this http://elouai.com/msn-emoticons.php
Have a look at the emoticon theme in Pidgin. They have sections for all protocols with possible text representation there.
I opened https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=604178 about custom smileys support.

Yahoo also has some unsupported emoticons in empathy, like :-h.
