Description Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2009-05-17 04:51:35 UTC
This is a blocking bug for the following two Compiz Fusion plugin bugs:

* http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1168
  (No accessibility events issued by Ring Switcher)

* http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1169
  No accessibility events issued by Shift Switcher

The impact of these bugs is that if Compiz is the chosen window manager and the Ring Switcher or Shift Switcher is chosen as the window switcher, Orca will not be able to speak and/or braille the currently selected item in the window switcher.

Work-arounds:

1. Use Metacity.

2. Use the Application Switcher or Static Application Switcher in Compiz (note that the fix for bug 466841 is needed in order for these switchers to work with Orca.)

I'm going to repurpose this bug slightly, making it a broader tracking bug for Compiz switcher issues so that we can close out bug 466841 which is fixed as best as it can be on our end.

Also tracking:

* http://bugs.opencompositing.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1027
  [a11y] odd window reactivate/deactivate events with switcher

The impact of this bug is two-fold:

1. When using Compiz and Alt+Tabbing, the speaking of the initial item sometimes gets cut off (due to an unexpected window:deactivate event).

2. When Tab is released and focus given to a window, we might get a little chatty, speaking the window that had focus prior to switching (due to an unexpected window:activate event that it shouldn't be issuing since it's becoming non-active).

Also targeting as FUTURE, because we have little control over external bugs.

This bug was open just to track a problem that existed in the fancy switchers of Compiz. Given that:

* There was nothing we could change in Orca to resolve this problem
* There were and are work-arounds:
  - Use the less fancy, unbroken switchers in Compiz
  - Use Metacity
  - Or, of course, use gnome-shell
* The feedback we got from the Compiz community was "not interested"

And now:

* We cannot even track the bugs which they won't fix and which we can do nothing about because the links to the issue tracker bring you to a generic GoDaddy page.

Closing this as NOTGNOME because there is no point whatsoever in keeping it open.
