"Compact View" in Nautilus vs. "List View" in FileChooser (178.88 KB, image/png)

One of those UI annoyances which has finally compelled me to file a report to an otherwise awesome software stack.

Picking a folder location to save a new file is quite tedious since I frequently traverse a variety of different storage locations in a 7+ level tree.

I was extremely pleased when the nautilus devs included "Compact View" back in 2.24. Navigation of directory trees is MUCH speedier.

Please (if not by default, at least at user's option) enable "Compact View" in the standard Open... & Save As... file dialogs.

"Compact View" in Nautilus vs. "List View" in FileChooser

In this shot, the Nautilus "Compact View" allows a quick visual scan for the directory of interest. By contrast, the "List View" in the FileChooser dialog requires that I scroll. Since I never care about "modified date," this column is simply wasted space for 99.9% of file browsing needs.

the FileChooser dialog has nothing to do with Nautilus.

patches to implement a "compact view" for the FileChooser are welcome, and their inclusion should be discussed either on bugzilla or on gtk-devel-list.

retitling for clarity.

It's not that I disagree that this is also a feature enhancement, but this was initially titled and described as a bug.

The current UI is inefficient because it displays a column (Modified Date) which gets used probably 0.1% of the time or less. Needlessly, users are forced to scroll to find files & folders because only 1 file can be shown per row.

I would argue this report is NOT a duplicate of 572066 because it's not that various options need be enabled, it's that the current UI does not best meet user needs and should be fixed. "Compact View" from Nautilus was provided for reference since it demonstrates much higher user efficiency.

Thanks!
