Description Vincent Untz 2009-05-06 12:24:13 UTC
In openSUSE, we patch nautilus to not use the system-file-manager icon because the folder icon is more recognizer to users than the current system-file-manager icon. And I'd like to drop this patch.

What do you think about changing the metaphor of the system-file-manager icon?

(note: this should probably also be done in the tango icon theme, I guess)
Comment 1 Vincent Untz 2009-05-06 12:25:56 UTC
See also nautilus bug 350962.
Comment 2 Lapo Calamandrei 2010-03-29 16:50:23 UTC
File manager metaphor is ok IMHO, nautilus should use folder icons and device icons (depending what the user is visiting) for window decoration and taskbar (as er openSUSE patch?).
Comment 3 Jakub Steiner 2010-03-31 16:42:20 UTC
I think it's not a matter of folder cabinet being an inappropriate metaphor for nautilus' launcher icon, but rather exposing this app icon in the context SLAB/gnome menu.

I can see this metaphor being perfectly fine for say application installer/updater (when selecting to install/uninstall software packages, reviewing updates). So it sounds like the .desktop launcher should be reviewed as to what icon to display.

I agree with Lapo and Jakub, but the File Manager launcher should never be exposed anywhere, only links to folders/devices. Those links should use the icons of the things they represent.
Comment 5 Hylke Bons 2010-04-22 19:12:54 UTC
Moving this to nautilus.

This is not true anymore in 3.0, so I think this can safely be closed as obsolete. Feel free to reopen if you have a good argument for disagreeing :)
