As discussed with Ray.

Currently, when logging in using GDM and a fingerprint reader, I get asked for my login keyring password for NetworkManager to connect.

The gnome-keyring pam module should be able to unlock the login keyring when logging in using a fingerprint reader, _as well as_ when using a password.

The pam module for fingerprint readers is pam_fprintd (which lives with fprintd).

Ideas welcome...
