Orca is currently a screen reader and magnifier for people with visual impairments. There are several bugs open in the Orca bug database to make it more applicable to learning disabilities, which we will get to as time and resources permit.

In the meantime, please describe:

1) The tasks you are trying to accomplish
2) The desired output you would like from Orca

Thanks!

Dear J Hughes,

Could you please look at bug #520595 and comment if it is the behaviour you wish to see implemented? If so, then this should be quite straight forward with Orca 2.27.3 or newer. If it is not what you want, then please see Will's questions above and we can progress from there.

Comment 4 Joanmarie Diggs (IRC: joanie) 2011-11-24 10:27:29 UTC
Orca fairly recently implemented additional options to not read everything, but only the on-screen text. I hope that will address the immediate problem. Regarding the long term: As was stated in Comment #1, Orca is a screen reader for people who are blind or visually impaired. Compelling solutions for users with print learning disabilities is desperately needed, but is also beyond the scope of what a screen reader should be providing. The Accessibility Team is actively seeking solutions in this area.
