Description Ville Pätsi 2001-07-20 15:18:31 UTC
Gdk-pixbuf has some stuff it does when scaling, that would be useful in gimp too as a new scaler algorithm. Choosing the algorithm should also be in the scaling dialog, and not only in the preferences.
Comment 1 Raphaël Quinet 2001-08-02 16:25:29 UTC
I do not know if the Gtk-pixbuf is much better, but I trust you on
that. I definitely agree on your second point (which should have
been filed as a separate bug report): the image scaling dialog should
have an option to select the scaling algorithm. The option in the
preferences dialog should set the default (which would be saved,
contrary to the option in the image scaling dialog). Most other
image editing programs have this feature in the scaling dialog and
this is very useful when you are editing some images and you want a
"Nearest neighbor" interpolation when scaling up, and a "Cubic"
interpolation when scaling down.

Next time, please submit two separate bug reports: one for the core
(the scaling algorithm) and one for the user interface (how to select
the interpolation method).

The second part of this report has been addressed in GIMP-1.3.

Regarding the use of the GdkPixbuf scaler: I don't think that it is
any better than the GIMP algorithms. I will close this report as
FIXED. If you think that our scaler needs to be improved, please open
a new bug-report and provide some images for comparison.
