GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 577626
"Write metadata to files" not applying
Last modified: 2010-11-16 10:56:11 UTC
+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #577583 +++ Please describe the problem: When changing the ID3 tag information within Banshee on an audio file in the music library, the tags appear to be updated; they appear correct in the music library and on e.g. an iPod. However they seem to not be saved in the audio file; if the track is removed from the music library and then re-added the tags have reverted back to their original, pre-edited state. The user then has to edit the tags again. Steps to reproduce: [This is with Edit | Preferences, "Write metadata to files" checked.] 1. Take audio file with erroneous tags 2. add the audio file to the music library 3. edit the tags from within Banshee 4. note the track appears correct in the music library 5. (optional?) sync with a portable device 6. (optional?) note the track appears correct on the portable device 7. (optional?) remove track from portable device 8. remove track from music library 9. restart Banshee 10. add the track to the music library 11. note the track appears in it's pre-edited form Actual results: The tags have reverted to their pre-edited state Expected results: The edits to the tags should be preserved so that the next time the track is added it does not need to be re-edited Does this happen every time? Yes
Which type of files? And does this happen with all files or just some?
I can confirm this bug on my system. The file type that this bug affects appears to be LAME encoded mp3's for me, but I have not tested it for other types. In addition, this occurs with files that I rip with Banshee. If I pop a CD in and then rip it in Banshee, the file information appears correct in Banshee. If I open the same file with Totem, or copy it to my MythTV DVR, the ID3 tag is completely blank. If any further information is needed, or if you would like some sort of log file attached, please just let me know.
I can confirm this on 1.4.3 (Ubuntu Jaunty via repository) using FLAC files that I ripped from CD with Banshee. The first thing I did when I installed Banshee was to enable writing metadata. I ripped a couple dozen CDs with Banshee, plus a few more with Sound Juicer for which Banshee could not find metadata (but that is another bug). All of the track metadata appeared in Banshee fine, and persisted even when I closed and re-opened Banshee. Today, I copied my entire music library to another computer and opened it with Banshee on that computer. All of the tracks ripped by Banshee showed up as Unknown Artist, Unknown Album. The tracks ripped by Sound Juicer showed up with the correct metadata.
Have the same problem with banshee 1.6.1. "Write metadata to files is checked" and file permissions are fine. Amarok can save metadata to files without problem.
Could you check this on 1.8.x? There were quite a few changes on this front since 1.6.x
I upgraded to banshee-1-1.8.0-21.4 and the problem seems to be solved there. Thanks a lot!
