GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 577167
Allow user to specify directionality of the color wheel
Last modified: 2009-06-09 18:38:57 UTC
In gradient processing, GIMP considers red, blue, green to progress clockwise (that is, increasing hue degrees progress counterclockwise). This is counter to my perception that the color wheel runs red, green, blue progresses clockwise. I just searched for "rgb color wheel" (without the quotes) in Google images. The numbers for a clockwise red, green, blue are approximately the same as a clockwise red, blue, green. Notably the one on the Adobe Web site is clockwise red, green, blue. But then, GIMP is not Photoshop. The bottom line is there appears to be no consensus as to which direction red to green to blue goes, so GIMP is not "wrong" but some GIMP users may perceive GIMP as being wrong. I am requesting that there be a preference added under Color Management in the Preferences dialog. Color wheel direction: Choices: Clockwise red, blue, green (default, to agree with existing GIMP implementation) Clockwise red, green, blue Applications: 1) Allow behavior of HSV CW and HSV CCW gradients to agree with the user's perception of direction. 2) Allow creation of an alternate color picker organized in a circle as a color wheel rather than as the current rectangle.
I tend to call this over-configurability and vote for closing as WONTFIX. Opinions?
I agree, we can discuss on the gimp-developer mailing list on switching the color wheel direction but we certainly will not bloat the preference dialog and the code to make this configurable.
Thanks for the bug, but closing as WONTFIX. Please turn to the gimp-developer mailing list to further discuss the wheel direction.
