GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 576586
[alsamixer] gnome-sound-properties freeze
Last modified: 2009-04-06 22:48:44 UTC
Description: Ubuntu jaunty (development branch) Release: 9.04 gnome-control-center 1:2.26.0-0ubuntu1 Few days ago I had installed Ubuntu 9.04 and I have some problem. Sound properties from Gnome menu doesn't work. For a while I see that it tries to run but nothing appears. In System monitor I see process of sound properties. This issue may be depend of ca0106 soundcard and with other soundcard's which don't have master volume control in mixer.

the issue as described on https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/345550 seems to be a gstreamer one

distro bug comment "It also doesn't work on ICE1712. Possible hint: all those cards don't have a Master volume control (in ALSA) AFAIK."

I would like to add that this issue causes gnome-panel to freeze so Gnome is unusable sometimes. Is problem too with Gnome sound mixer - it doesn't apears.
I have a ICE1712 based card (Hoontech DSP 2000) and it works just fine.
I have both an integrated intel card, as well as an M-Audio Delta 1010 (also ICE1712-based). I am experiencing this issue. I can confirm this started to happen upon upgrading to Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04). For me the speaker icon in the panel does not show up. Selecting System/Preferences/Sound works some times, and sometimes not. Sometimes I can launch the sound properties window from the command line, and sometimes the command does nothing, just freezes up until quit with ctrl+c. I can also confirm that this issue seems to be related to the whole panel freezing. My setup sometimes has the panel frozen right after booting, with no human interaction. Rebooting solves the issue. I'm not sure if it's relevant that I have multiple sound devices, but that is usually something less tested.
the issue seems to be a quite frequent one in jaunty, do you need some extra details?
I can confirm this bug also in my system, running jaunty beta. Soundcard : Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01) gnome-sound-properties freezes when running as a normal user, but launched with "sudo" seems works like a charm.

I have already reinstalled gnome-control-center using "sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-control-center" but I'm still having this issue. I have both normal headphones and usb headphones/mic plugged in.

The fix is in Ubuntu Jaunty now, and I can confirm everything seems to work. :)
I confirm - works fine with CA0106 and HDA Intel.
Same here. I can confirm everything works now after the update.
