Description Akash 2009-03-24 06:32:57 UTC
Quicken allows specification of Categories (equivalent to GnuCash accounts) and also Classes. Classes can apply to multiple accounts.

Example: if we have an organization with offices in Toronto, Washington, and Dhaka, and if each office has 10 accounts (e.g. Cash, Bank, Office Rent, Staff Salary, Electric Bill, Phone Bill, etc), then in GnuCash we would need at least 30 accounts or sub-accounts to manage the finances for this organization.

In Quicken you would only need 10 accounts and 3 classes. In Quicken when you enter data, e.g. Office Rent for New York, you first enter the account (or Category) and which would be Office Rent and then the class which would be New York. Then when it comes time to print reports, you can specify which classes to include. So you can print reports for individual locations.

You can accomplish the same thing in GnuCash but it requires a much more involved account tree. For example for Office Rent you would have to have 3 accounts (or 4 if you include a parent account), e.g. Office Rent:New York, Office Rent:Toronto, Office Rent:Dhaka. Whereas in Quicken all you need is one account, Office Rent. The Quicken class function allows you to separate transactions based on class if desired. Thus Quicken allows a much simpler account structure for organizations that have similar accounts across multiple divisions or multiple locations.

So far this is the only Quicken feature I have found that is superior to GnuCash.

Kind Regards from a happy GnuCash user.

In Quicken 2008 "classes" have been replaced by "tags". I would be delighted if GnuCash could implement a tagging system for each transaction entry.

Thus a transaction could be tagged as a "Toronto" transaction. Then when reports are generated an option would allow only transactions tagged "Toronto" to show. This would greatly increase the flexibility and power of GnuCash.
