Description Oded Arbel 2009-03-02 09:22:10 UTC
When showing a message list in a MAPI folder on some folders, and for some messages, the subjects are not shown in the message list.

When loading the message in the message viewer or preview pane, the subject line is visible.

(screenshot to be attached shortly).

Screenshot showing the problem

As can be seen in the screenshot, some of the messages in the message list do show their subject lines, but others do not.

This happens for me on the INBOX (and possibly other folders which I haven't looked at yet), and for all messages after the date shown in the screenshots.

For new messages that arrive when Evolution is open - sometimes they show the subject line, but sometimes they don't.

I can confirm the same problem, running Ubuntu Jaunty.
It seems as if the downloading of subject headers either happens or doesn't each time Evolution is launched or Send/Recieve initiated. What I mean is that those headers that do have the subjects were all received into Evolution at the same time, and those that don't were all received into Evolution at the same time too.

Here's a screenshot:

Would it be helpful if I was to run openchangeclient so that you can see the format of the data that is being pulled from the Exchange server? If so please tell me how to run it, i.e. what parameters, and I'll do it.

I can confirm the same problem running Fedora 11 Preview release.

Most of my subjects in most of my folders do appear. But there is one folder in particular where I do not see subjects appear.
Comment 5 Johnny Jacob 2009-08-17 09:49:17 UTC
in 0.27.90 there were some fixes related to encoding issues (related to subjects in message list)

Can we please check if this is happening in 0.27.90 ?

Moving this to needinfo. Thanks.

This is still happening with the latest version on both the gnome-2.28 branch
and also the latest in git master as of today (8 Dec 2009). See more
information in bug #604028

I can't change the status of this bug but it should not be marked "needinfo" anymore.

I believe the Severity of this bug should be Major and the priority set to Urgent. It's not so useful to have a mail reader where the subject line is missing in half the messages...

As I said in the other message, I stand ready to help debug this at any time, if someone wants to give some guidance on where to set breakpoints or add extra logging or whatever.
Comment 9 Oded Arbel 2009-12-08 15:30:25 UTC
Sorry, I stopped using the MAPI connector due to the stability issues, the fact that I have work to do and that I can't be bothered to backup my inbox before trying out MAPI (due to the expunge killing all email bug which I heard was fixed recently).

As per Paul's comment #7 I'm setting this bug back to UNCONFIRMED - can someone with permissions set confirm it please?

Can you try openchangeclient against your account and check it it is able to fetch 'subject' of the mail?

A how to on openchangeclient is here : http://websvn.openchange.org/filedetails.php?repname=openchange&path=/trunk/doc/howto.txt

Thanks.
Comment 11 Paul Smith 2009-12-09 15:35:08 UTC
Did this: it was pretty easy; thanks for the link. Since I build from scratch I already had all those tools installed. I created a profile in a separate directory and used openchangeclient --fetchmail to a local file. In this file I see all the mail and the top of each message has a "message-id: ..." line, followed by a "subject: ..." line, followed by From:, To:, Cc:, Bcc:, Attachment:, Codepage:, and "Body:". I find it extraordinarily odd that the rest of the mail headers are missing (!?!?!) but whatever.

Anyway, the subject: line for all my email messages in this output is present and does contain the correct subject. I've looked at the emails where the subject is missing in Evo and those where it isn't, and nothing stands out as concerning.

Just to be sure I deleted my MAPI account in Evo, then shut it down and made sure all Evo processes were gone, then I removed the ~/.evolution/mail/mapi/myaccount directory, then I restarted Evo and recreated the MAPI account, and visited my Inbox. It downloaded all the email again, and I still had missing subject lines. It's hard to say if they were all the same identical lines that were missing before.

It seems to be a bug in the evolution-mapi initial download of the folder (once the account is created new messages I receive appear to all have correct subjects), not a problem with openchange.
Comment 12 John Crossno 2010-01-23 23:17:15 UTC
I am using Evo 2.29.20100112-1.2 x86_64 (which shows as
2.29.6 in the Help -> About box). The MAPI connector version is 0.29.5-1.3.

In all of my messges regardless of where they originated (Exchange user or internet email), I see the subject, both in the initial list as well as in the email itself.

What I do not see is the "To:" and "CC:" information in the email that originated from an Exchange user, but I see it when the email originated from an internet user and delivered to my Exchange account. Evolution displays it correctly in the message list (I defined a custom view), but does not show it when the email is opened, or in the email headers.

I thought this issue was reported already somewhere. I can provide message headers as they show up in Outlook as well as in Evolution if needed. I'll see about finding that other bug and make a similar comment there if I do.

Good (or bad?) I'm seeing this too in my Inbox. Confirming and let's see.
Comment 15 Milan Crha 2010-02-18 18:33:10 UTC
Aha, No. It's doing proper thing to me. I was slightly confused seeing all the messages in OWA has some title, but some in Evolution don't. It turned out that it's correct, because OWA is showing there "Untitled Message" and clicking on it makes it show no subject.

I believe that this got fixed with commit to bug #608379, thus I'm marking it as a duplicate. Feel free to reopen if you see this with evolution-mapi 0.29.91+. Thanks in advance.

With respect of To/Cc/Bcc, please open a new bug report. Thanks.
