It will be a very good idea do add backup/restore option for the database. Because to me the information stored in hamster-applet is priceless and I  already had corrupted database (long live backups :) ).
I am also interested in writing such functionality myself and it will be interesting to hear your comments and thoughts.

Correct me if I am wrong but the hamster is using sql-like database for store? If it is so it will be great to backup the data to sql statement and bzip it.
