Currently, the documentation of Rhythmbox mentions:

"At this time, Rhythmbox can only read information but cannot write (like tags modification, tracks deletion or copy track from Rhythmbox Music Player to your player)." (see page: http://library.gnome.org/users/rhythmbox/unstable/portable-audio-player.html.en)

This is not true, at least on Ubuntu I can achieve this by activating the 'Portable Players - MTP' plugin via Edit > Plugins. The documentation should reference this.
