Could you be a bit more specific and maybe provide a sample file? gziped subtitles should be supported as well as bzip2 and lzo compressed ones.

The problem is a different, we don't support autoplugging of subtitle renderers yet, only autoplugging of subtitle parsers. See bug #570753.
