GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 570889
Make albums more useable
Last modified: 2010-12-14 14:13:17 UTC
Hi guys, this is more a feature request rather than bug. Problem: ======== I have a lot of compilations downloaded. Such a compilation can include many aritsts, when I now browse music Library it shows the same Album many times and it always lists one one artist and I do not even see the whole album listing all artists. I've attached picture to demonstrate the problem. I am not sure what is the best, perhaps album viewer (and if you can make it clutter powered Apple style, that would be awesome)? Or make it configurable to show album only when at least 3+ artitst/songs? And while at it, please make right click on albums (Play now, Add to queue, Randomly play this album, Seek on Last.fm). Many thanks, banshee rocks so much better than rhytmbox these days, I wish it was default for gnome.

Did you read http://banshee-project.org/support/guide/track-list/ ? Did you set the "Album Artist" to a common value ? The "right click on albums" suggestion is bug #528948. In the future, please keep to one issue or suggestion per bug, it helps us keep track of things.
Hi, thanks for pointing me to track-list url, it really helped out. However I believe some smarted mechanism is needed and apply this automatically. I believe the group of users who would find this information is really low, most people I see working with Banshee have the same problem like I did and they just think it is a limitation of Banshee (like me until yesterday). Anyway, thanks a lot.

Is there any usecase for which it makes sense to list the same, for the user indistinguishable, album name multiple times? For the case that two artist have the same album title they are distinguishable by the artists column. In my eyes the way banshee behaves is not the intuitive reaction a user would expect.
(In reply to comment #5) > Is there any usecase for which it makes sense to list the same, for the user > indistinguishable, album name multiple times? > > For the case that two artist have the same album title they are distinguishable > by the artists column. There actually is. For example, in my library I have two albums called "Ashes", one is by The Prophecy, another by Tristania. I would not want Banshee to show just one entry for them in the album browser because: * The albums have different artwork, I want to see both of them. * The second line showing the artist name would become empty or turn to something like "multiple artists". * It wouldn't work well with suggestions from bug 528948. * It wouldn't show the accurate number of albums in the first entry of the album browser: All Albums (X) * Selecting that single entry would show both albums, but they are totally unrelated (other than by a common name). I'm closing the bug, it's up to the users to provide correct metadata for their albums, Banshee cannot magically read people's minds. Sure we can use some heuristics, but it's not exact science - some users will eventually complain that their correctly tagged and distinct albums are put into one "compilation". (In reply to comment #3) > I > believe the group of users who would find this information is really low, most > people I see working with Banshee have the same problem like I did and they > just think it is a limitation of Banshee (like me until yesterday). There's a new documentation effort under way [1], please comment in the mailing list and suggest documenting this feature. [1] http://mail.gnome.org/archives/banshee-list/2009-July/msg00089.html
Hi, I'm sorry to resurrect this old report but I'd also like to voice my opinion on the matter. I listen primarily to classical music. Lots of classical albums have different performers on the same disc. If you've got a multi-disc set, then you have tens of different performers. I'm attaching two screenshots of two of some of the worst-cluttered albums I have in my library. One is a Mozart Anniversary disc set (containing performances by various orchestras, chamber groups, soloists, choirs, pianists, violinists, etc), and the other is a simple Yo-yo Ma compilation featuring the cellist with various groups of musicians. This behavior is evident even in my mainstream albums (though certainly not as large a scale) - All it takes is a slight difference in the artist's name and it warrants an entirely new album. Have three slight differences in artist names in the album? You've got three new entries. Apply that to most of the library and you've got some serious clutter. Thanks for Banshee - It's one of the best players I've had the pleasure of using.

(In reply to comment #7) > > I'm attaching two screenshots of two of some of the worst-cluttered albums I > have in my library. In comment 2, Bertrand posted a link to Banshee's user guide, and at the bottom of that page, there are instructions for telling Banshee to treat an album with multiple artists as a compilation. If you follow those instructions, most of the clutter in your album list should be eliminated. This whole process doesn't seem to be as intuitive as it could be, though, because bug reports like this have happened pretty frequently since Banshee started using a cover art grid in the album browser. Bug 624311 is open to track the issue.
