When using a theme with pixmaps for buttons (e.g. Aqua), apps like gedit &
balsa take very long to process each keystroke I enter into text fields.

We've never tracked this bug down, but since both the pixmap
engine code and the GtkText widget are being replaced for
GTK+-2.0, it's fairly safe to say it won't be encountered
there.
