Description Sharif Nassar 2009-01-26 19:48:14 UTC
In GNOME desktop, one must choose between ALT-middle mouse click and ALT-F8.
These are both extremely poor choices for me.

Not only are the function buttons are far away and out of reach on
most keyboards, but it is a very slow process to resize a window with
the keyboard only.

Enter the mouse. On many window managers I can think of, the keyboard +
mouse binding for window resize is ALT-right mouse click and drag, or
is configurable.
For some reason, GNOME is trying to make me use the middle mouse
button.
This is terrible for usability. On my laptop, and many others, there
are only two mouse buttons. It is very difficult for me, with my
apparently limited manual dexterity, to press and hold ALT while also
chording both mouse buttons, and then magically drag the window to
resize.
Let's say I have an external mouse on this laptop, or I'm using a
desktop. Guess what, the odds are very high that this is a wheel
mouse. Perhaps I have very low quality mice in my menagerie, but I
have a hard time holding down the middle mouse button while dragging
without also scrolling. The scrolling (counted as a button 4 or 5
press) cancels the resize operation, and my frustration mounts.

Please, oh please, give me the choice for which accelerator I use.
Or tell me where to start in the source code so that I can change it myself.

Is this a duplicate of bug 437910, which is about to be committed and closed, or am I misunderstanding?
Comment 2 Thomas Thurman 2009-01-26 20:09:47 UTC
(Or is it a duplicate of bug 496536, a patch for which is given on the Launchpad page you link to?)
Comment 3 Sharif Nassar 2009-01-26 21:18:00 UTC
Yes, I'm glad to find that it is indeed a dupe of bug 437910.

My bug search was apparently not very well executed, and I shall flog myself appropriately.

Thanks for your time.
