GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 569201
Variable MP3 are shown to have incorrect length
Last modified: 2009-01-26 21:55:56 UTC
I am having the same issue as reported below. VBR files that are ~128kbps and (say) 3-4 minutes long are displayed in Rhythmbox as ~32kbps and 17 minutes long. When encountering a VBR file, Rhythmbox seems to just 'grab' a low bit-rate and estimate the song's length based off of that. This is frustrating because it makes it impossible to create / burn playlists using Rhythmbox, which thinks my playlist is way too long to put on a CD. I also never use Rhythmbox's estimates of how long an album or playlist will run, since it is often way off. I have used tag-reading programs which are able to estimate that a file's "average bit-rate" is about 128kbps (or whatever). I would think if Rhythmbox made a similar assessment it could accurately estimate song length. +++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #553468 +++ Please describe the problem: When I play a mp3 which is VBR encoded (this happens with all MP3 that I encoded with sound converter from WAV), rhythmbox shows incorrect length of file Steps to reproduce: 1. Open an mp3 2. Wait till progress bar gets to its end 3. See that music continues to play Sometimes, the opposite music stops playing before progress bar reaches its end Actual results: Expected results: Does this happen every time? With all VBR MP3 I have Other information: Launchpad bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/271755
If the mp3 has a xing header this should work nicely (ie the length should be correct)
