GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 568801
pidgin smileys not identified in pidgin with braille/speech
Last modified: 2011-01-09 18:22:23 UTC
Unfortunately when someone sends me a smiley or something similar over msn eg :-) it appears as a blank on my braille display. I try to avoid speech, but test with speech, and it seems it isn't identified with speech either. So would it be possible to make orca display the smiley in braille say as a :-) or whatever it is :-( etc, just as text? And for speech, I'm not sure, speech users will have to contribute, but I'm thinking speaking the words "smile" or something similar would work. Is this possible? Thanks to all the developers, orca has come a very long way, and it's working extremely well on my system, apart from the odd bug or 2 it in my opinion is a fantastic project, and with out it, I'd be stuffed, so thanks to everyone involved with this wonderful project. Keep up the great work! Daniel.
Thanks for the kind words Daniel! I'm working on a Firefox issue at the moment. However, if memory serves me, those graphics aren't being exposed to us. I'll go back and check later. In the meantime, have you tried disabling the graphical smilies? To do so, get into the Pidgin Preferences dialog and choose the Smiley Themes page. If you choose "none", the original punctuation should be shown. And if we get the punctuation, we should pass it along to you. :-)
Please see also bug #567143 - When I using Pidgin with Orca, the simbol characters are not spokened.

Reopening. :-)
I have no experience with pidgin, but this looks like a duplicate of bug 567143 or the reverse
