Right now, the ping timeout is 2250. That's quite short. There have been some bugs about this (see bug 144557, eg) and some idea to improve this (see bug 121934). But putting 5 seconds is probably safe too for loaded machines. It's not that long either, so I think it's a good compromise to improve this easily.

We have a trivial patch for this in openSUSE.
