Description Nickolay V. Shmyrev 2009-01-21 22:46:46 UTC
I wanted to use evince as a presentation viewer for PDF presentation, as
a linux counterpart to what's powerpoint. It's a pretty good idea that
evince supports a full screen mode and the usual powerpoint keyboard
commands, so I can even use my remote control. Great! :-)

But currently I have a particular problem: OpenOffice impress insists on
including transitions when exporting presentations as PDF files, even
when choosing the option to not include transitions. E.g. when in
OpenOffice the page transition is "Fade smoothly" the PDF contains
something like

/Type                  -> /Page
/Parent                -> Ref(911)
/Resources             -> Ref(953)
/MediaBox              -> [ 0 0 794 595 ]
/Annots                -> [ Ref(909) Ref(910) ]
/StructParents         -> 0
/Trans                 -> Dictionary
      /D                     -> 0.3
      /S                     -> /Dissolve

Now with some PDFs evince tries to produce that transition, but it looks
really ugly. When moving from page A to page B, it immediately displays
B, then A again, and then slowly fades from A to B as expected. I guess
evince needs the display of the next page to convert the PDF into a
raster image.

I then tried to produce a simple example, and again the PDF cotnains the
Trans dictionary as above, but now evince does not do any transitions at
all, it just shows the next page. I'll attach an example.

When does evince display PDF transition and when does it ignore?
