GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 567644
Live CD boots to black screen
Last modified: 2010-12-29 04:18:58 UTC
Please describe the problem: When I enter Live CD I select the Default settings, then it lodas some stuff on black screen and then screen goes black. Steps to reproduce: 1. Insert the Live CD 2. Select Default Settings Actual results: It gives me Black screen Expected results: To enter GUI Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: I'm using 1680 x 1050 monitor, AMD 64 X2 6000+, 2GB RAM, 8800GTS 320, GIGABYTE GA-M55S-S3 F12
I can attest to a similar issue. Live CD continues to selection screen, no matter which options i choose: http://apcmag.com/images/apcapc/howto/dualboot_vista_xp_xp_first/media_1221305023537.jpg Failsafe, graphics safe, and even default fail. The failure occurs when it tries to load the video driver. And my monitor shows "out of range." I would imagine failsafe and even graphics safe modes would prevent this behavior. Either way, I've read in another thread that reverting to gparted 0.3.3-5 might rememdy the situation. I'll report back with my findings. What pop's on the most recent live cd and one example of a safe graphics boot: Boot from safe graphics fails at this point Gparted 0.3.3-5, which appears to be gentoo in aspects, and allows frame buffer support (i saw the penguin and colored text) yet still fails booting. Who knows? Any help appreciated.
The old versions of GParted, such as 0.3.3-5 were based on gentoo and are no longer maintained. New versions are based on Debian. The newest version of GParted Live at the moment is 0.4.8-1. Is this the version you tested with? If not would you be able to try this latest version? GParted 0.4.8-1 is based on the Debian Sid repository (2009/Nov/03).
I too am experiencing this problem, and with the very latest stable version. I have tried a few different graphics options but always end up with either a black screen or a black screen with a cursor (static) top left. and 'num-lock' is unresponsive. incidentally other 'live' cd's work fine eg clonezilla rough spec - phenom 9600 black, pair of radion 4850's, 4gb ram & a bunch of HDD's - if it helps to know more just say.
How about give gparted live 0.6.1-2 a try? Please let us know the results. Steven.
OK, I'll give it a go tonight & let you know
Sorry for the delay. I tried the beta as suggested and it also fails to boot fully, however it did give the following msg when in bummed out.... // Fatal server error No screens found // Carl.
Hello, this is for gparted-lve-0.5.2.9: I tried three different monitors where the live CD produced a black screen due to "out-of-range" video signals (through an analog VGA connector). Interestingly this does not happen when the X server starts up, but before when some text menu asks for further configuration options. I don't know the specific reasons, but maybe all those monitors (most part of a KVM switch these days) are not plug-and-play (lack of DDC (display data channel)). Anyway users would benefir form a more conservative video timing. For reference, the problem occurred on a HP/Compaq DL380 G5 server where the graphics card is reported as an "ATI ES1000".
Carl, So 0.6.1-2 does not detect your graphic card... Could you please put "radeon.modeset=0" in the boot parameter? Or maybe give testing GParted live 0.6.1-4 a try? Please let us know the results. Thanks. Ulrich, Could you test gparted live 0.6.1-2 or 0.6.1-4? Also please test that with "radeon.modeset=0" in the boot parameter. Thanks. Steven.
Hi, I had the same problem of "no screen detected" with an ATI radeon HD4870, and the "radeon.modeset=0" workaround worked for me, even if some things were a bit slow, like moving windows. But it allowed me to modify my partitions successfully, so thank you :)
Hi, I tried the live 0.6.1-4 as suggested and it stops at the same point as 1-2, not altogether sure where i would put the "radeon.modset=0" suggestion, i'm not that familiar with linux! Not sure if this is significant either but the lines above the "no screens found" read // (EE) VESA: kernal modesetting driver in use, refusing to load (EE) no devices detected // needless to say all the boot options are default when trying this. Carl.
@Carl: you can press [tab] when selecting "launch gparted live" or something similar on the gparted live boot menu and just add this ( radeon.modeset=0 ) at the end of the line, and start the system (I am not sure but I think you have to press ctrl+x to use the line you modified)
Recently Steven and I worked together to try to get GParted Live to boot and work properly on a wide variety of video cards. Would you be able to try GParted Live 0.7.0-4?
Ok I'll give it a go & report back
Hi, Sorry for the delay. Short answer - You've fixed it :) I didn't experiment with any of the actual functionality of GParted as i worked around that one in the end. But i can confirm it boots just fine all the way to the gui now and on the same h/w platform ie. a pair of 4850's Hope that helps, Cheers Carl.
Thank you Carl for the confirmation that GParted Live now works on your hardware. I will leave this bug report open for a couple of weeks for others to respond. If no problems are reported then I will close this bug report.
