Description eye.of.isis 2009-01-06 00:07:44 UTC
It seems impossible to write a space in the search box, seeing as pressing the space bar is trapped and causes rhythmbox to toggle play/pause. I suggest spacebar trapping should be disabled when writing into the search box.

Not a dupe of this one. It's a bug somewhere else to do with the french keymap using a unbreakable space on the space bar.

As far as I remember, the reason I closed bug 531279 (which describes the same problem) as a duplicate of bug 402882 was that changing the 'play' shortcut to something other than ctrl+space will fix this too.

Bastien, do you have more information about why the French keymap triggers this bug? What have unbreakable spaces to do with this?

This bug is highly annoying for French people. When one needs to enter the name of an artist with a space in it (quite common), it doesn't work, which means you'd have to install another program to set basic tags. I feel quite dumb trying to explain to my friends/parents why such a bug can be present for years in our default music player. :-/

No, I don't.

Ah, found detailed information on an Ubuntu bug report. The problem is indeed with a French keyboard variant. A workaround is to replace in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/fr
    include "nbsp(level4nl)"
with
    include "nbsp(level4n)"

This is what Ubuntu have applied to their keyboard layout package. Their explanation in the Changelog is:
    - don't include level4nl but only level4n for french oss layout.
both space and Ctrl + space returned the same XLookupString, which
prevents space using in some application using
gtk_action_group_add_toggle_actions to setup Ctrl + space accelerator.
We loose rctrl accelator but that's better than not having space in
those applications. Setup it manually will reintroduce
      https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198759 (LP: #221112)

And it seems a bug was going to be committed upstream in xkeyboard, but the discussion has stalled for a few months. See
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15804

So maybe there's no need for a fix in Rhymthbox after all? ;-)

I'm sorry I wasn't very helpful submitting this bug report. Back then I had trouble understanding the logic behind bug reporting.
Seeing as the problem disappeared sometime later, I completely forgot about it. It must have been due to the Ubuntu xkb update.
Thanks to all for your work, and sorry for the inconvenience.
