GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 566196
Utility windows don't minimize with image window(s)
Last modified: 2009-04-30 09:24:40 UTC
Please describe the problem: The only way to minimize the GIMP main window is by right clicking on the menu bar and then choose "Minimize". It doesn't goes to the bottom tray (that containing the "Start" button) then, but just above it at the bottom of the free screen. When right clicking to open it again, the recover menu is grayed out and you have to click on "Maximize" (i.e. full screen). Steps to reproduce: 1.Open GIMP in Windows 2.Open other programs 3. Actual results: Expected results: Does this happen every time? Yes Other information: Occurs in Windows XP. Not tried in other platforms
What you describe is ceertainly not what is intended, or people in general see. Are you using some shell (Explorer) replacement? Or some other kind of "useful" unhancement that changes the look and feel of Windows?
I am using a plain Windows XP without any enhancements. Updates my version when asked for. Kolbjoern Stuestoel
What's the hint of the "main window" (toolbox?) - utility or normal?
What hint? Some further informations: GIMP 2.6.0 opens just like the v2.4 with 3 separate windows: the toolbox (main window), the dialog containing paths, layers etc. and the image window. In v2.6.2 and 2.6.3there is only two windows in the bottom tray, the image window and the dialog window. No toolbox window here. It looks like the toolbox window is connected as a part of the image window. I have reinstalled GIMP from "gimp-2.6.3-i686-setup.exe" a couple of times with same result. As I am using the older versions in my translation work I have not uninstalled older versions of GIMP prior to installing newer versions. (Installed to different folders). Today another error: Unable to open GIMP 2.6.3 (and) while downloading Cygwin packages. (v2.6.0 OK). Perhaps some pointer/register conflict in my computer? Have to check. Kolbjørn
Ooops. I forgot to tell that all other windows (docks) except the image window lacks the buttons mentioned. (The button with the "_" like sign and that with the square(s)). Only the "x" button is showing up. "Today another error: ..." mentioned in previous letter: The solution was the normal Microsoft way: Shut down and restart Windows ;-) I therefore have no idea of what went wrong. Perhaps GIMP 2.6.2 (and 2.6.2) interferes with some other programs? Kolbjoern
This is intentional. The toolbox and dock windows are utility windows and as such are not supposed to provide buttons for minimizing. They are supposed to minimize with the last image window that is being closed.
Supposed to, but not acting so. The idea is good but on my GIMP 2.6.2 and 2.6.3 versions for Windows the other windows don't follows the minimizing of the image window whether it is empty or contains an image. Closing the image window closes GIMP (as clicking on the "x" button on the toolbox window), minimizing it only minimize the image window leaving all other GIMP windows on the scrren. :-( Sometimes when starting GIMP the dock windows get all three buttons, sometimes only the shut down button (except for the toolbox who always have only the "x" button and the image window who always have them all). I have not figured out what circumstances (i.e. GIMP settings, other programs running etc.) leading to this varying result. When running GIMP on top of another program it looks like the buttons are working properly (when the other windows has only the "x" button). Clicking on the minimizing button makes all GIMP windows disappearing, but they are still on the screen beneath the other program's window. Perhaps they are put downwards on the screen stack instead of be minimized? Kolbjørn
The tool window (and other windows opened) does not minimize when I minimize the image window. They just go one step lower in the window stack, i.e. one step below other windows opened on the screen. I would like to keep GIMP calm in the bottom tray until I am going to work on it. Perhaps not a bug, but still annoying. (GIMP 2.6.6 for Windows). Kolbjoern
