GNOME Bugzilla – Bug 565108
Autostart VPN connection when a particular network is active
Last modified: 2009-04-15 21:50:12 UTC
I'm not sure how this would pan out with a wired connection, but most people I know connect to a wireless interface when using VPN anyhow. It would be nice if the VPN connection manager had a setting that would cause the VPN to automatically start when connected to a particular network. Example: Let's say a user has the wireless network "MyWireless" defined in their wireless network connections. From within the VPN network connections interface, they have a VPN called "MyVPN". It would be great if MyVPN had a drop down box or even a text box that allowed the user to define "MyWireless" and when they did then, whenever the wireless interface is connected to MyWireless, then MyVPN would startup automatically. This should probably also be integrated into the Mobile Broadband network connections interface, as well. I request this since most people that use VPN's tend to use them when connected to a particular network. For me, it's the wireless internet connection at school. However, I've known a lot of mobile users (salesmen, executives, etc.) that use a mobile broadband connection and use a VPN to connect to their company's network. In both of these examples, having a VPN interface capable of defining an "autoconnect on network" option would save us the trouble of having to start the VPN everytime we do connect to that particular wireless network, whether it be via wireless NIC or mobile broadband devices. Otherwise, 0.7 is a great release, I love that I can define multiple networks for my various interfaces. Great job, guys! Brett Ussher
