[PATCH] simple patch to add --previous option (459 bytes, patch)

none Details | Review

Description Dwayne Bailey 2008-12-19 00:22:13 UTC
Gettext tools have recently added the --previous option to msgmerge. This preserves the previous English message for fuzzy items and makes it easier for translators to see the current and previous messages and decide how to change their current translation.

The PO entry after msgmerge --previous looks like this:

#: file.c:39
#, fuzzy
#| msgid "Old Message"
msgid "New Message"
msgstr "Oud bootskap"

A PO editing tool is then able to display both to the translator and they can more easily and quickly see differences and make changes.

[PATCH] simple patch to add --previous option

I'm not sure what would happen on older versions of Gettext with msgmerge that does not support the --previous option. I'm not sure if it will fail gracefully or not.

damneds-lies already uses --previous, and so far feedback was positive. I'd love to see this in intltool as well, maybe even as default.

intltool has switched from the GNOME to the launchpad.net infrastructure nearly three years ago: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-i18n/2009-April/msg00275.html
The intltool product in bugzilla.gnome.org has been deprecated and closed for new bug entry since April 2009.

I am now closing all remaining open reports about intltool as NOTGNOME as part of GNOME Bugzilla Housekeeping.

Reporter: If the problem that you reported here is still valid in a recent version of intltool we kindly ask you to report it again to https://bugs.launchpad.net/intltool/ so the intltool developers get notified about it.
