For me (I-Pod Nano 4th, Software version 1.0.3), cover art works, but somehow about the same number of megabytes of music that I transfer is also transferred to the iPod_Control/Artwork folder (into the ".ithmb" files -- 2 GB of music will result in 2 GB of .ithmb files).
OS is Ubuntu Intrepid, Banshee version is 1.4.1.
Comment 2 Louis Cunningham 2009-02-16 22:18:14 UTC
This is what I have noticed: When one uploads an album (that has cover art) that albums cover art is added. But right when you add another album with cover art, the previous cover art is removed and only the second covers album art is there.

This also seems to be the case when synchronizing albums. Let's say for example you have added fifteen albums to your ipod. All of those fifteen albums (provided they have album art) will have album art when the synchronizing process is over. BUT when you add one more album, with cover art, the previous fifteen covers are removed and only that ONE cover's art is present.

Finally (which just happened to me), I synchronized with 10 pieces of cover art present. I then added an album (with cover art), and then only that one cover showed up in the art. I then decided to sync one more time, just to see if I could get the art back, and now none are showing up. This shows how one MUST add the album with the cover art the first time, or else it will be removed on the next sync.

Good luck, would love to help with this bug, so just tell me what to do!
Comment 3 Louis Cunningham 2009-02-18 06:43:11 UTC
Aha!

Ok I found a (rather obnoxious) workaround.

Last night I tried this out:

1. Removed ALL music from my Ipod

2. Ensured that all of my albums had cover art.

3. Resynced my ipod with banshee.

And BAMO! all of my cover art was there! It is great to find this workaround, however, it is a rather time-consuming one also.... with removal of ALL music and then resyncing.... which in some cases, can take hours.

I also know that if one then wants to add another album, then one MUST remove all music and do a total resync for all cover art to show up. If one does not, only the added album's cover art will appear.

I was thinking that maybe a programmer could tell banshee to keep old cover art, and just add new ones? Something I haven't tried was moving the cover art folder on the ipod onto my hard drive, adding the songs that I wanted to the ipod, and then moving all the cover art *.ithmb s back to the ipod. I don't know if this would work... but it is a thought.... :\

Hopefully this gains some insight on the issue. HOWEVER, this is only a workaround for someone with ALOT of time on their hands. Hope this helps someone, and helps to finish off this bug.

THANKS

You don't want to mess with the .ithmb's yourself -- I deleted them and from then on the I-Pod was bricked.
Comment 5 Louis Cunningham 2009-02-21 01:20:50 UTC
Ah not good; scratch that idea then. My original way does work, so now we just have to find out how to fix the big totally... Thanks for the input Aaron, I hope that you got your Ip-od back and working.
Comment 6 undertakingyou 2009-03-11 01:44:11 UTC
I don't see any resolve to this. I am using 1.4.3 and find that album art is completely erratic. Within an album I will have multiple album arts. Most are totally wrong.

Now in contrast to Louis Cunningham's experience I have multiple art but, it isn't correct. I am going to try his workaround now to see if it changes. I will create a playlist of just music to sync and do it all at once.
Comment 7 undertakingyou 2009-03-11 03:26:04 UTC
So, by following Louis' work-around I do have proper album art transfer.
Comment 8 Louis Cunningham 2009-03-11 05:23:27 UTC
Great good to know that my way works. Unfortunately this is rather time-consuming. If the ops or the OP could kindly state in either the description or in teh below information that a workaround is available, I think that would help people out. However... It would be nice (really really nice) to try and find a way to get this worked out. Thanks.

I doubt the ipod was really bricked, it's really really hard to brick an ipod, I even salvaged mine from failed firmware upgrades. In the worst case, you can restore it to factory settings using itunes. Most of the time, a rm -rf iPod_Control on the ipod will be plenty enough if it really no longer works.

I can reproduce
Comment 12 Caleb Sawtell 2009-03-19 03:37:17 UTC
I made a mistake in the original report the problem occurs on the second sync for me it looked like it was not working at for most of them because I have other file formats that needed to be transcoded and my ipod and synced and started syncing again on the transcoded files.

No need to spam this bug (so feel free to delete this), but the I-Pod was bricked (it wouldn't reset and it wouldn't connect to a computer). And it made me feel the thing was surprisingly fragile. (Maybe I don't know the specific fu that would get it working again, but still.)

I can also reproduce this bug (Nano 4G, 16GB)... It just seems that he deletes the database and recreate it only with the newly added covers...
Comment 16 Ian McMichael 2009-09-14 14:00:24 UTC
I have a Nano 4G 8GB and am using Banshee 1.4.3 (from the PPA) on Ubuntu 8.10. I also see the problem where only the covers from the latest songs synchronised to the device display. Some database corruption (or at least massive duplication) must also be occuring as I currently have 2.9GB of audio on the device but "Other", which I presume must be the cover art, is 2.6GB. This bug seriously limits the amount of music that can be synchronised to the device with Banshee.

I'm happy to help diagnose and provide further information if that is of assistance in fixing this?
Comment 17 Stefan Knorr 2009-11-15 13:46:01 UTC
Is the bug Ian McMichael and I reported a separate bug from this one, then? Should I open a new one?
(Ian McMichael, of course is right with the cover art dbs taking up the space.)
Comment 18 Andy Clayton 2010-01-18 07:32:42 UTC
Ahh, I know what is going on here. The code to write out the proper album art link is there, but the code to read it isn't. So when you load and re-save the database any existing links are broken. Plus there is no check to see if album art is still referenced anywhere, so it just sticks around if it isn't explicitly removed. My fix for Bug 555329, once I clean it up and get it approved, should also fix all of this.
Comment 19 jim.hanrahan 2010-06-02 01:01:14 UTC
I have been able to reproduce this bug using Banshee V1.7 running on Ubuntu Karmic using an iPod Nano 4G.

I also have been able to replicate the workaround: blanking the iPod and then syncing with Banshee copies the album art over correctly for the first sync, although the other database is nearly as large as the music database. After that, the art disappears again.
Comment 20 jim.hanrahan 2010-07-30 02:32:43 UTC
I have now installed v1.7.3 on Karmic and am encountering the same bugs. Album art is not copied correctly and the art database is almost as large as the music database.
Comment 21 David Nielsen 2010-12-06 03:14:05 UTC
All of these reports seem to be against the old ipod-sharp backend, does this exist on the new Appledevice backend which was introduced with 1.7.5?

It would be extremely useful to know if this is reproducible in 1.8.0 or even better the daily ppa releases.

Comment 22 dave.euser 2011-03-29 22:43:39 UTC
This still exists with Banshee 1.8.1 downloaded from the ubuntu ppa.

Tried the daily build (1.9.4+git20110228.r1.704ddb6-0ubuntu1+lucid) and it seems to work, after deleting all content and re-syncing.
Comment 23 David Nielsen 2011-03-29 23:20:30 UTC
Thank you for the confirmation. I will close this as being fixed in the upcoming 2.0 stable release.

This problem has been fixed in the development version. The fix will be available in the next major software release. Thank you for your bug report.
