Description Jean-Philippe Fleury 2008-11-27 16:56:34 UTC
Please describe the problem:
If I'm working on a program A, I click on an icon on the panel to open a program B, and I return working on the program A. When the window of the program B opens, it takes the focus even if I've returned working with program A.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open gedit and write some text.
2. Supposing that there's a gftp launcher on the gnome panel, click on the gftp icon to open this program.
3. Return in gedit to continue to work on the text.

Actual results:
When the gftp window appears, it takes the focus. So the text that I was typing in gedit appears in the "Host" field of gftp.

Expected results:
As I returned to gedit while the loading of gftp, gedit should keep the focus and stay the active window, and gftp should open in background.

Does this happen every time?
No. This bug doesn't happen with all softwares, but always happens with some combinations ( for example gedit/gftp).

Comment 1 Jean-Philippe Fleury 2008-11-27 17:21:46 UTC
This bug happens to me very often. Here's some examples of combinations:

- firefox / OpenOffice.org
- gedit / vlc
- gedit / kate
- gedit / leafpad
- gedit / gcolor2
- firefox / konqueror
- Etc.

It's the same problem explained in this bug description, for example:

- In Firefox, write some text in a field or a textarea.
- Open OpenOffice.org and return in Firefox to continue to work on the text.

When OpenOffice.org appears, the text is being typed in OpenOffice.org instead of in the Firefox field or textarea.

It's particularly annoying when we're typing a password in Firefox, because the password begins to appear in clear in the other program.

This bug still happens with Metacity 2.34 and Gnome 3.1.
Comment 3 André Klapper 2020-11-06 20:05:15 UTC
bugzilla.gnome.org is being replaced by gitlab.gnome.org. We are closing all old bug reports in Bugzilla which have not seen updates for many years.

If you can still reproduce this issue in a currently supported version of GNOME (currently that would be 3.38), then please feel free to report it at https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/metacity/-/issues/

Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
