Description Paul Bolle 2008-11-21 12:18:41 UTC
The View menu (both in the File Browser and in spatial mode) allows to pick just one of three Views: Icons, List and Compact. Nautilus always uses on of those three Views.

The Tree in the Side Pane (Sidebar Panel in Bugzilla) is also called a View in a number of places. However, it's not of the same category as the three Views and shouldn't be treated as such. Views are a global setting. The Tree is a "widget" that is only shown if three conditions are met: the File Browser is used; the Side Pane is visible; the Tree "mode" is chosen.

I suggest:
- it shouldn't be called "Tree View" (e.g. in various places section 6.3.7 of the documentation) but perhaps just "Tree" (which the documentation already does a number of times);
- it's (single) preference shouldn't share the Views tab of the Preferences dialog with the Icons, List and Compact Views and moved to (perhaps) the Display tab.

Makes sense to me. Probably "Tree Sidebar" would be more informative ("what 'Tree'?") It's still relevant for 3.2 docs. I'm not sure where documentation bugs should be filed.

I'm not sure. Probably remaning the header from "Tree View" to "Tree Sidebar" would be enough?

gnome-user-docs, but right now the docs are "right", as they reflect the current denomination in the Nautilus preferences.

I think I agree with the proposal of the original reporter of this bug.
Mixing it with the other view preferences is confusing, since it's not a view indeed.

This bug should no longer be present with the latest Nautilus redesign.
