Description Nick Jenkins 2008-11-18 02:57:29 UTC
Can the size of a contact's notes field be increased?

Steps to see the relevant field:
* Go File -> New -> Contact
* Click on "Personal Information" tab.
* The "Notes" field only has enough space for 2 lines of text.

Thoughts:
* Obviously there's a lot of info possible for a contact, and it all has to go somewhere.
* That said, a number of other PIMs provide larger "notes" fields, so if you're migrating to Evolution this field seems excessively small (in my personal subjective opinion at least). E.g. I have some contacts with 30 lines of text, which is basically unusable when you have a two line text field, and from that need to subtract a vertical and sometimes a horizontal scrollbar (in case you have exactly _one_ line of text!).
* There's a fair bit of wasted/unused space in the contacts dialog. For example, between "video chat" and "profession", there's a lot of empty space, which only contains the text "job". And between "manager" and "office", there's a lot of empty space, which only contains the text "miscellaneous". And on the "contacts" tab, there's a lot of space underneath "instant messaging" section that's not being used. I know that the arrangement of these fields may have changed in later versions (e.g. 2.24 may differ slightly), but the "notes" field is a reasonably-commonly-used-field, which (being a free-form text field) becomes more usable with increased screen space. Is there some way that the "notes" field can get a little bit more screen space please, perhaps by rearranging current fields, so as to have a bit less non-functional blank space?

for evolution;

I would suggest rather special tab for Notes.

Thank you, Milan!

Yes, that sounds good to me. It's a much better idea than trying to increase the contact's Notes text box from 1 or 2 lines of text to 3 or 4, thank you for thinking of it.
