Description Michael Monreal 2008-11-16 11:30:30 UTC
Split out from bug 348822:

gconf-editor's icons are fully themable but the default icon set is still using the old pre-tango GNOME look.

There was a lot of discussion about the metaphors but no real agreement. For now I think it would be best to just update the current set using tango guidelines.

Icons

Copied from the old bug, these can be 1:1 replacements of the old style icons.

In bug 348822 comment 46 ff, I was concerned about the origin/licence of these icons. Just for the record, can you please state where they exactly come from, and under which licence they're made available here? gconf-editor needs GPL2+ or LGPL2+ icons.

Looking at the icon files themselves, they seem to have been written by inkscape. If so, this means the PNGs are a transform of the source code; we would need the SVG source code for these icons as well, since that's the preferred form for making modifications.

proper licensed and credited icons

I'm the creator of the "tangofied" icons. GPL2 is fine and also suitable because the "file icon" i use as base is based on the gnome file icon and has the same license. Attached icons have proper license and credits now.
Comment 4 Michael Monreal 2008-11-16 15:01:30 UTC
Thanks, Sebastian.

Btw I vote for the "old-based" set, because the new schema icon looks too much like our "Preferences" icon and the string icon is basicly the metaphor we use for the "text" mime type.
Comment 5 Martin Lettner 2009-05-01 18:20:32 UTC
Since the default icons of gconf-editor are still those old ugly ones i finally decided to make some new ones on my own under a proper license and 2.26 file names so maybe they will hopefully be integrated some time soon...

I attached the icons so you can try them yourself.
Created with The GIMP, source file was on of the emblems of tango icon theme. Inspired by needcoffee.deviantart.com and lokheed.deviantart.com.

Please tell me what you think and what we have to do so gconf-editor gets new good looking icons some time soon!

Martin, thanks for the icons. I tried them and they look great!
Unfortunately, it's too late in the 2.27 cycle now for them to be committed for 2.28, so I'll postpone this to 2.30.

Cosimo, better late than never?
Comment 9 Cosimo Cecchi 2011-03-07 05:46:01 UTC
Yeah, totally forgot about this one. It's now fixed in master.
